Where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez

We made it to Cabo! We had light winds on the last stretch of our trip down Baja from Bahia Santa Maria to Cabo San Lucas, so we motor sailed most of the way. We saw tons of turtles and several sail fish and manta rays jumping out of the water. More awesome ocean life keeping us entertained from the cockpit.

We anchored off the beach in Cabo San Lucas. We opted not to go ashore and instead swam from the boat while listening to the hotel dance music and alcohol induced chatter coming from the beach. We left first thing in the morning to head over to San Jose del Cabo for a more relaxed vibe.

An easy four hour motor from Cabo San Lucas, we entered the beautiful and modern Puerto Los Cabos. We were able to get a slip at the marina and went across the street for lunch. An easy going, quaint town with a handful of small restaurants and two unique hotels. We befriended a local store owner as we passed by and he said, “please come in, let me sell you something you don’t need” and handed us his card for his transportation services. We called our new friend several times after that day for visits to downtown San Jose del Cabo.
Our boat neighbors at the marina gave us two bags of mahi-mahi from their recent fishing trip, about five pounds – cleaned, filleted and frozen, making for another incredible dinner from the Solitude galley that night (shout out to Brian, thank you!). A day later, a 95’ sport fishing boat pulled into the marina and, after recognizing the name, we realized it was the same cruisers Jim and John met in Tenacatita, Mexico 14 years ago! We caught up with them for a bit and shared our similar cruising schedules.
Our biggest challenge now was finding a spot to keep Solitude for the holidays. We were told all the marinas from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz were full. The haul out facility was also full but they were able to work us in and we scheduled some TLC for Solitude. While we are celebrating the holidays, Solitude will receive new bottom paint, a new shaft seal, new rudder packing and a full buff and wax.

We are grateful to be home for Christmas with our families..and for lots of hot showers!
